Birgit Aasa is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the ERC funded Imagine project (European Constitutional Imaginaries: Utopias, Ideologies and the Other) led by Professor Jan Komárek. She holds a PhD in Law and a LL.M from the European University Institute (Florence, Italy) and a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Law from the University of Tartu (Estonia). She has been a Visiting Scholar at Columbia Law School in New York City, USA and has extensive experience as a practicing lawyer qualified at the Estonian Bar Association, specialising on issues of administrative, constitutional and EU law.

Her current research at the Imagine project focuses on EU and domestic constitutional law, theory and history. She is responsible of the project’s Estonian case study. Her broader research interests include EU law, constitutionalism and fundamental rights, judicial cooperation and trust, the theory and practice of the European Court of Justice.
